A Lesson from God Through a Goat
If my title draws your interest, then do I have an opportunity for you! All my life, growing up I’ve been a talker. If you live around a talker, you know how pesky that can be. So early on, I realized that God is a patient listener and He is capable and desirous to speak with His humanity, His children.
Many people believe in God, but to hear His voice… What! He wants to talk to me and to you! Challenging…right? It seems easier for a child to believe that, than it is for adults. “God talks to people today? Are you kidding me?” Then, as an adult, I came across a ministry that teaches classes on hearing the voice of God through “journalizing” Bible scriptures. Journalizing through Bible scripture safely teaches students that they can listen for God’s voice through that scripture. The student learns how to listen for God’s voice in every situation. I cannot tell you what a joy it is for me to have found this ministry. The safe community, that is built on God in these classes, is like nothing the world offers.
However, I owe you a story for the title that hopefully drew you in, because my little story is sweet and will always be one that impacted my life. But your own stories are out there and hearing God’s voice is a gateway to a life of intimacy and joy in God.
Some years ago, I acquired a very small herd of adult Nigerian Dwarf Dairy Goats. They are smart and endearing little creatures. Time passed, and the goats passed, all except one named Macy. What an incredible little creature she was that I grew to know and love.
One evening as I was putting her into the barn for nighttime, she turned her head to view past the door down the lane to another part of the pasture. I just reached down and turned her face gently so she was looking into the barn, and in she went. At that point, God spoke to my heart and said, “That’s what I do with you when you are headed in the wrong direction, I reach down with My hand and turn your face to the right direction and in you go.” That was comforting to me. He loves His children so much that He give us special attention.
The story is not quite over, for that was Saturday. The next day, Sunday morning, on my way to church, I liked to listen to a radio station that plays all kinds of worship music, even the old hymns. That morning, I had almost forgotten to turn it on. When I did, an old hymn was just beginning. It was one I recognized immediately. The name of the hymn was “He Leadeth Me… by His Own Hand… He Leadeth Me.
